LOCAL GROUP HOST SERIES OF SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY MEETINGS

A Galway based group of people hope to set up the first ecological community in the West of Ireland. The Galway Sustainable Community Project (GSCP) aims to construct a small, purpose-built environmentally sustainable settlement in the West where residents will produce some of their own food and energy and form a strong, close-knit community.
The group will host a series of public meetings every Thursday in October in and around Galway starting with a public meeting on Thursday October 7th in Ballybane Resource Centre from 6.30pm to 9pm to discuss the development, which will have private houses belonging to or rented to families, shared facilities and community buildings where residents can eat, work and socialise together, and land devoted to food growing.

"Conventional modern day living leaves too many people isolated and looking for a stronger sense of community," said Kerry E'lyn Larkin of the GSCG.
"At the same time, it's becoming clear that the Western world needs to reform our environmentally devastating lifestyle - and this is easier to do in a co-operative fashion than individually".
"A sustainably built and run intentional community addresses both of these major issues, and will provide a high quality of life for its residents."

In recent months, the GSCG held 2 public meetings and undertook a fact-finding trip to the UK. The group has also produced an online video about the project which can be viewed on www.sustainablecommunity.ie The website contains additional information about the project such as the group's vision and activities.

The series of public meetings will be as follows:
